The development of Patterson Lakes as we know it today began in the 1950s. The land was purchased by the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) to build a sewage treatment plant. The plant was completed in 1964, and the surrounding land was developed into a residential area.
The suburb was officially named Patterson Lakes in 1969 and was made up of a series of man-made canals designed to create waterfront living.
